My Halloween Bunee

This is the piece that is going to be in a Halloween show in New York. It is also the reason I have not posted or drawn in a couple of weeks. This was way more complicated to do than it might appear, but it is done and off the NYC and I can now concentrate on other art.

Art Swap

I have been concentrating on my toy for the NY show so I have not posted much but here are the ATC's for the Swap I did recently. My love for typography and graffiti is obvious.

EDM #34- Fall Leaf

This is a little bit of a cheat since I think this leaf is a result of weird weather, not Fall; but it did look Fall like.

Bad Fuel Day

In response to going over (way over) $100 to fill up the big ol' truck; I created this graphic for Cafe Press shirts. I know the high price of fuel is probably forever and other countries have had this burden for a long time, but I can't help but think of all of the people who are not in the lucky place I am of working at home. So for those of you for whom fuel prices have changed the quality of your life, I give you this graphic for perhaps a little smile.

Urban Vinyl

My of my great passions is for Urban Vinyl or Designer Vinyl, this is an example of one of my custom toys. I have just had the honor of being asked to participate in a Halloween Custom Toy Exhibition at The APW Gallery (see link in sidebar) in New York. I will be posting my entry as well as other toys in the coming days. Customizing toys is another great way to use your art skills as anything goes when making the toys unique.

EDM #6- Childhood Toy

I have a very "now" kind of memory. My childhood is for the most part a mystery to me, but I remember vividly buying this stuffed frog from the drug store in Twentynine Palms while visiting my grandfather "Pappy". I remember seeing it on a high shelf and getting it down and cuddling it. I have kept it for probably 50 years. It has survived countless moves and a dog who used it as a pillow. I did this drawing 3 times before getting the expression right and although it is dirty and sort of droopy I still love it.

EDM #164 Camera

This is my recent birthday present of an underwater 10meg point and shoot. We are going to Hawaii in October and this is for snorkeling. We were going to buy a housing for one of my other cameras, but this was actually cheaper. I can't believe how prices have dropped and quality increased.

EDM #183- Dangerous

Well, some of you know our Ford 350 is named after the T-Rex Sue. We need something to cover up a scrape on the rear quarter panel (never go through drive-thru with a 21 ft truck after having acupuncture ). So I thought of doing a picture of a scary T-Rex and it would also fit the weeks challenge.

EDM #76- Flower

Flowers are something I like to look at but not to draw, so this was interesting. I have several other flowers in my garden that I will try also, but I thought I would post this. I have not posted for a couple of days because of working on a new study for our graphic novel. It is over at Urban Signz. I also cannot go out in the sun because of a stupid face treatment I am having to do so I am cooped up and I look like I have some sort of horrible skin disease.

Tomorrow we are going to the Clark County Fair and I will wear a big hat and maybe a veil (grin) and hopefully do some fun fair sketches.

EDM #182 -Our Truck Sue

We call our truck Sue after the dinosaur in the Chicago Field Museum. She is a Ford F350 crew cab long bed.; twenty-one feet of power. I chose an angle I felt made her look sort of in your face. I will probably try for another one of the side view. The first one ran off the paper :)

EDM #181 Trashcan

This is the evil trashcan at the Oregon Zoo that I tried during two concerts this week to draw. This unbelievably is my best effort. I think I will be looking for a friendlier receptacle to try again.

What I did with my Ear

So I decided to use my EDM drawing for a shirt I had been working on in Cafe Press. This one is for all of the mothers out there. The link to the shop is at the top of the sidebar if you want to check out my other weird ideas.

EDM # 79

Ears are very strange parts of the body. The more I worked on this the odder it seemed, but since I need to put an ear into one of my shirts this was a good start for understanding what the parts of an ear look like.

Font Fun

This design and the one that follows were done for t-shirts on my Urban Signz store on Cafe Press. Typography is one of my true passions and poking fun at it is a hoot.

EDM #36-Draw in Public

Well, I consider this a step forward for me. I am super anal about my work and have had problems with perfectionism stopping my forward progress. This is certainly not a great drawing, but it has a lively line quality that appeals to me. After a bad thing happening (don't take a Ford F350 longbed through drive through if you like your paint job) it was fun to go to the Oregon Zoo concert, listen to jazz and nervously draw in public for the first time in a very long time. Thanks EDM for the push to do all of these wonderful challenges.

First shirt drawing

This is the first drawing of my own making that I have used on my shirts at Urban Signz in Cafe Press. It was a pencil drawing that I made starker in Illustrator. I think it is appropriately grungy for the piece. Feels like a milestone to me. As much as I love fonts, it is a kick to see something you drew on a shirt.

Haven't quite gotten to an EDM challenge yet today and soon I will be off to the acupuncturist which usually wipes me out. It is hard getting old, everything hurts and I gave myself tennis elbow playing Guitar Hero (my bad). Since I need that arm to make a living I have cut down on gaming which gives me more time for art I guess.

I want to thank everyone over at EDM who gave me such a warm welcome yesterday. The group makes me want to improve and do more every day.

Finally EDM #1

I have finally got this blog up and running. I plan on using this to show my progress at re-learning to draw as well as showing some of the other art I am pursuing. I got a Master's in Art a long time ago and then went into photography and then into hi-tech and Photoshop; eventually ending up teaching at Clark College here in Vancouver, WA.

My passions are typography, graffiti, lowbrow art and gaming. I realized that in order to do the work I wanted to do in my t-shirts and other artwork I needed to get my chops back. When I discovered the wonderful people at the Everyday Matters forum, I knew they would provide the sort of kick in the rear I need. So I am starting at challenge #1 and working my way through.
